gift wrapped in brown paper tied with handmade red, white, and green cording; shiny Christmas ornaments

Each year, we think hard about what to give – we want to give THE Special gift for Christmas but aren’t sure what it could be.

Right about now, you probably have a Christmas tree in your home. It is standing guard over gaily wrapped packages. Those gifts may include anything from clothing, toys, or even handmade items. One or two may be ‘the gift to end all gifts’ – which is something a loved one wants ‘more than anything’.

It is a blessing to be able to offer gifts to others. Part of our joy at Christmas is finding that one perfect item. We may spend all year hand-piecing a quilt, and then praying for the recipient with every quilting stitch.

Hours may be spent in the kitchen. We bake delicious gifts for our neighbors. Food for the holiday dinner is lovingly made. Our ovens seem to be on a permanent 350-degree cycle.

The Special Gift for Christmas

But there is one. It is the Special Gift for Christmas we rarely reflect on giving. And that is the gift of Unconditional Love. This love for us started long before the world was ever created. Before the beginning of time as we know it, we were already loved deeply, completely, and unconditionally.

Unconditional love isn’t just a gift we can unwrap. We can’t put it on our Christmas list. And we can’t wrap it up for someone else. Unconditional love just IS. We already have it. We have had it for longer than we have been alive. And we will continue to have it for an eternity.

The greatest representation of Unconditional Love is the gift of Jesus Christ. His humble birth and quiet life was filled with love for others. It wasn’t just his disciples at the time whom He loved. He also loved us as He was teaching others, stretching out a healing touch, and breaking bread to feed the multitudes; and at the same time He was laying the ground work to do the same for us.

We have always been on His mind and in His heart.  This year, as you admire the beautifully wrapped packages under the tree, think of the one gift you have already received – His Unconditional Love.

And as you stand enjoying the twinkling lights on the tree, remember the bright light Jesus brings into our life every day. Take that thought and let His light shine just as beautifully and brightly through your own life.

And share the special gift for Christmas – the gift of His Unconditional Love with others.
