The Chair That Everyone Chose

There seems to be one in every family – the chair that everyone chose. It usually isn’t the prettiest chair in the house. In fact, if you sit down too fast, there’s a good chance it would remind you exactly where that broken spring is. More than likely, it isn’t the newest. The upholstery is probably faded, almost beyond recognition. Maybe one arm is a little wobbly, or the cushion has settled into the exact shape of the people who have spent years sitting there. But somehow, without anyone ever making an announcement, everyone knows whose chair it is.

In our family, nobody had to assign seats. We simply drifted to the places that felt familiar. Company usually claimed the dining room table or the nicest chair in the living room, while the rest of us naturally settled into our usual spots. Looking back now, I couldn’t tell you exactly when those places became ours. They just…did.

It’s funny how a chair can become part of the family without anyone noticing.

That old recliner might have been where Daddy sat after a long day of work. The rocking chair by the window belonged to Grandma, who somehow managed to shell peas, watch the grandchildren, and keep up with every conversation in the room all at the same time. Maybe there was a kitchen chair that always seemed to be occupied by the person making biscuits, paying bills, or staying up just a little longer after everyone else had gone to bed. It may even have a knitting project in the seat as a way to ‘save your place’.

The chair itself wasn’t important. It was the life that happened while someone was sitting there.

Those chairs listened to stories about first days of school and new babies. They were there for holiday meals, late-night phone calls, quiet prayers, and afternoons when somebody just needed to sit without saying much at all. They witnessed laughter, tears, disagreements, celebrations, and the ordinary moments that never make it into family photo albums but somehow become the memories we treasure most.

Even now, I can walk into some homes and almost expect to see someone sitting in “their” chair, even though I know they’ve been gone for years. It’s amazing how a room can remember a person.

I’ll bet you’re thinking about a chair right now. I suppose that’s one of the things I love most about home. It isn’t really built from walls, furniture, or decorations. It’s built from habits. From ordinary routines repeated so many times that they quietly become traditions. We don’t usually recognize them while we’re living them, but years later they become the stories we tell around the table.

Sometimes I wonder which chair people associate with me. Will they remember where I liked to read? Where I sat while writing? Which rocker creaked every time I leaned back with a glass of sweet tea after a long afternoon? I hope they won’t remember the chair nearly as much as they’ll remember how they felt when they sat beside me.

After all, that was never really the purpose of the chair. The chair itself was simply a way to relax while spending time together. But long after you stand up, the memories are still sitting there.

And when you think about it, that’s probably all any good chair ever wanted to be.
