My Story:

Mary’s Heirloom Seeds is one of my favorite seed sources. Gardening is an expensive undertaking.  As a frugal gardener, I look for ways to cut my spending, and one of the best ways I have found is to purchase heirloom seeds. Most heirlooms are indeterminate, and if you save the seeds, they will grow back true to type. With hybrids, most seeds will revert back to a parent plant – which could be one of two or twenty, depending on how many were used to get the desirable traits. Shopping for my seeds at Mary’s Heirloom Seeds meets both my criteria – heirlooms and cost-effective!

Hybrid vs Heirloom:

A hybrid weeds out flavor in order to get other traits to emerge – size, color, and shipping ability. Fresh produce in the grocery stores are usually hybrids, and that means little to no flavor. By growing heirlooms, you get flavor first, and size and color come in second. Most heirlooms do not ship well, and that means you will rarely find them in the produce section.

My Usual Order:

I order an assortment of seeds – vegetables, herbs and flowers. Not once have I been disappointed.  A 99% germination rate is excellent, and I get that with Mary’s Heirloom Seeds.  Each plant grows ‘true to type’.  In other words, I didn’t plant a tomato and get an herb. Yes, that has happened with other seed companies, and it is very frustrating.

What I love about this product:

The selection: Mary has a wide variety of all classifications – vegetables, herbs, flowers, grains and fruit. It’s more than just seeds. She also offers gifts for the gardener, soil amendments, Seed Combo packs and Tinctures. Her blog is a link on her business page, which offers great information for any gardener.  Mary’s prices are in line with other companies. However, she also offers a selection for just .99 cents, but you will need to order a minimum of $10.00 for this offer. Consider that most seed packets are already a minimum of $2.75 to $3.00. This means you can only order 3 packets of seeds for the same cost. Most gardeners need a variety of at least 10 seed packets, and probably more.  That makes this offer a serious consideration. Each packet has more than enough seeds for any home gardener, and that includes the .99 packets! Shipping is swift. I received my order within 10 days, and the seeds come right to your mailbox!

Thoughts:

I honestly love Mary’s seeds.  The quality, fast shipping, and the prices are all exactly what any gardener wants.
