The Farm Wife - Living a Simple Life on the Farm

The Farm Wife – Living a Simple Life on the Farm

Julie’s life journey took her from a typical, suburban life in the city to a rural, 60-acre farm. Once there, she began her journey towards learning how to live as simple a life as possible.

She talks of her daily rural ‘by the seat of her pants’ education, and how she is held together by her faith in God – as well as duct tape, hay string and a gluing agent called ‘rust’.

Along the path, she is learning to garden using heirloom seeds, getting kisses from the cows, collecting eggs from the chickens, getting um…(cough..) gifts from the barn cats, and trying to learn as many of the ‘old’ crafts as possible – canning and preserving food, saving seeds, weaving, knitting, crocheting, and others – and living as frugally as she can.

Her stories include how she got there, the learning curve, and the good, the bad and the Frankenstein rejects you encounter when living on a farm. She offers insight to living in a new community, how to hang on to a baby calf who chose to go swimming in a septic tank, recipes, craft ideas, and a few excerpts from the education she received from the local beauty shop.

Grab a glass of lemonade, pull up a rocker, and sit down with Julie for a good visit. Laugh with her. Cry with her. Pray with (and for) her. Take a walk with her across the pasture and down to the pond.

Then if you are brave enough, head in to the kitchen and try your hand at cooking a possum. (She does confess that is one thing she hasn’t done, and probably never will, either.)

Learning to live a simple life may not fix all of life’s problems, but it is certainly a way to help you provide for your family, cut expenses and live a quieter life at a slower pace. The Search for a Simple Life outlines the basic steps you can take to start shifting your lifestyle.
