Welcome to the Farm Wife!
I am Julie, and I am The Farm Wife! I live on a 60-acre farm in NW Louisiana with my husband, cows, chickens, cats and dogs. In my younger years, my dream had always been to move to Dallas and have a career that required designer suits, fashionable high heels and a briefcase to match. Have you ever heard the old saying:
“If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans”
Instead of west to Dallas, God sent me southeast to this farm. And believe me, He knew what He was doing. I have never been so content in my life, even if we do resemble the old 60’s sitcom ‘Green Acres’ a little too much; and hardships, trials and errors just mean we woke up to another day.
It didn’t take me long to realize that by having a farm and making it successful, you needed to be married to the farm. It takes the same amount of love, desire, dedication, compromise, understanding, compassion, mercy and grace to create a successful farm life as it does to create a successful marriage – hence the name, ‘The Farm Wife’.
When we first arrived, I did what most people would do moving into a completely different lifestyle. I studied, researched and read everything I could get my hands on. What I discovered was that my heart had always been yearning for a simple, quiet life.
My goals were to:
- Have a garden that produced enough to feed my family
- raise my own fresh beef, chicken, pork and fish
- fresh eggs
- fresh milk from which to make my own butter, buttermilk, cheese and yogurt
- improve on my baking and cooking skills, beginning with bread
- to wear jeans, tennis shoes, leather gloves and a smile of contentment
- and to share these lessons with others
Since I moved to the Farm
I have done quite a bit of all that. I have stretched my wings to include:
- learning how to weave, knit, crochet, make rag rugs and other crafts
- gardening with heirloom seeds, and saving those seeds for future gardens
- dealing with all types of livestock
I am eager to embark on any other learning journey my goal towards sustainability leads me. It is by my faith in God that I have come this far. It will be by His Hand that I keep moving forward. And quite frankly, I am looking forward to where He leads me from here.
Join me in my journey to living as Simple a Life as possible. Bear with me as I shed tears from the hardships. Nod your head with understanding as I mutter with frustration. Go ahead and wince as I nurse the bruises of my body. And it’s okay if you laugh with me as I am pulling myself up out of the pond or a mud puddle while trying to move cows from the pasture to the weaning pen. I promise I will share my handkerchief, my Advil, and more stories of what it really means by:
Living a Simple Life on the Farm.
